Walk into any builder’s yard and there are a dozen different renders on the shelves. Here’s the plain-English guide to the main ones, what each looks like, where it suits, and roughly what you’ll pay.
Sand finish (the Gold Coast classic)
A traditional cement render, hand-floated to leave a fine sandy texture. Very common on inter-war and post-war Queensland homes. Comes in fine, medium and coarse depending on the sand grade.
Looks: warm, traditional, takes paint beautifully. Suits: brick, blockwork, heritage matching. Cost: $.
Bagged finish
A thinner cement coat rubbed onto brick with a hessian bag, leaving the brick texture and mortar lines visible through a soft cement skin. The cottage / coastal Queensland aesthetic.
Looks: textured, organic, brick reads through. Suits: brick fences, character cottages, hospitality fit-outs. Cost: $.
Smooth (steel-trowelled)
A cement render finished with a steel trowel for a tight, almost polished surface. Very contemporary look, but unforgiving — every imperfection shows.
Looks: contemporary, architectural, clean. Suits: modern homes, feature walls. Cost: $$.
Broom finish
Render combed with a broom while wet to leave parallel lines — can run horizontal, vertical or diagonal. Strong Mediterranean / Spanish look.
Looks: textured, directional, Mediterranean. Suits: period-appropriate restorations, pool surrounds. Cost: $$.
Sponge finish
Render dabbed with a damp sponge to leave a soft mottled texture. Forgiving on patches because it hides the join well.
Looks: soft, mottled, friendly. Suits: retaining walls, garden walls, casual finishes. Cost: $.
Acrylic render (rolled or trowelled)
A factory-mixed polymer-based render, usually applied with a roller or trowel. Often comes pre-tinted in your chosen colour so it never needs painting. Brands include Render Systems Australia, Rockcote and Dulux AcraTex.
Looks: uniform, modern, colour-locked. Suits: blueboard, foam, fences, modern claddings. Cost: $$.
Textured acrylic / coloured render
Like acrylic but with aggregate (sand or chip) for a coarser texture. Can be applied thick (5–8mm) for a high-end architectural feel.
Looks: chunky, designer, Mediterranean meets contemporary. Suits: feature walls, full elevations on architectural homes. Cost: $$$.
Venetian plaster (polished)
An interior decorative finish — multiple very thin coats of polished plaster burnished to a marble-like finish. Catches the light differently as you move past it.
Looks: luxurious, hand-crafted, depth and movement. Suits: feature walls, entries, bathrooms (sealed). Cost: $$$$.
Marrakech / Tadelakt-style
Decorative finishes in the Moroccan tradition — warm earth tones, micro-cement looks, water-resistant when sealed. Increasingly popular for bathrooms, feature walls and wet areas.
Looks: warm, organic, Moroccan/Mediterranean. Suits: feature walls, bathrooms, entries. Cost: $$$.
